After two days, Sonny joined the navy. His dream of being a jazz pianist and a musician conflicts his brothers idea of being sucessful. Unfortunately this is a reoccurring problem with sibling, especially with the older sibling.
His mother tells him about the death of his uncle, a story she had kept from him until this moment. The flashback ends there. This was shown when Dee asked for the quilts that were made from generation to generation from Mama.
After one especially difficult fight, Sonny told his brother that he could consider him dead from that point on. Though he knows that ultimately heroin cannot work, he also knows that he may try it again. The narrator also suffers, although he has blended into Harlem better than the rest of his family.
Sonny reluctantly agreed to do so. The middle section of the story is a flashback. Sonny told his brother about his dream of becoming a jazz pianist, which the narrator dismissed. After two days, Sonny joined the navy. Sonny kept with his dream of being a jazz musician despite all of his troubles and his brothers urges to acquire a college degree.
Light brings some hopes for the better future life, as well as redemption and life revision. Sonny writes a long letter back to his brother in which he tries to explain how he ended up where he is. He tried to hide the truancy letters, but one eventually made it to the house.
Sonny and the band get on stage and play, and as they play, the narrator watches Sonny struggle with the music.
Also, each of their arguments never were really solved, just brushed of to the side causing more tension between the two. Sonny is not thrilled with the idea but reluctantly agrees in order to avoid another argument. Gradually, the brothers bridge the gap they had built over the years and accept the different ways in which they dealt with their fates.
Light, ultimately, comes to signify salvation, comfort, and love, whereas darkness represents the fear and desolation that always threatens to extinguish it.
